Ephesians 11-14 (NLT) –Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church:  the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.  Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.  This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

Matthew 10:40-41 (NLT) – Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the one who sent me.  If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet.  And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.

Apostle – “he that is sent”, an emissary, delegate on behalf of another (in this case – Christ).

Acts 9:15 (NLT) – But the Lord said, “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.”

Ephesians 2:20 (NLT) – Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.  And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.

Acts 9:22 (NLT) – Saul’s preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in Damascus couldn’t refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah.

Prophet – A person who speaks for God by divine inspiration

1 Chronicles 12:32 (NLT) – From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives.  All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.

1 Corinthians 14:3 (NLT) – But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.

1 Corinthians 14:24 (NLT) – But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgement by all, as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare.  So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

Evangelist – A person who seeks to share the Christian faith

Pastor – The overseer of the flock

Acts 4:36 (NLT) – For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.

Teacher – The educator of sound doctrine
