Preacher: Nick Carico | Series: Matthew 6 |

Introduction
Starting a series based out of Matthew 6
Read – Matthew 6:1-6 (NLT), Matthew 6:16-18 (NLT)
A common theme concerning how we approach doing the things God has commanded
and instructed us to do
3 times is says that doing these things before men to be admired by others will be
“the only reward that they will ever get”
3 times it says that if you do these things in private, “your Father, who sees
everything, will reward you.”
• We receive our rewards from the audience of our actions
Who got what they wanted?
Both – They both had a reward in mind, and received it
• Whether it was what they realized they most deeply wanted or not
In general, when it comes to the matters of the heart and the mind, we are almost
always getting what we want the most in our being
• It may not look like the finished or final outcome at that given moment, but we
are still getting what we wanted
Ex. – Building a House
• We may want many things, but the one that has taken the most ground within
our hearts will overrule the things that we have less want for
¨ Ex. – Comfort vs. growth
Ex. – Coffee Shop Evangelism
Not calling wrong or right – are we happy with the reward that our
desires are producing
• Change does not often occur in our lives until the power of the individual desires
within us change
¨ When one desire that was lesser becomes greater in our lives – we change
Relationship is a heart matter
Reward in relationship is given based on if a person’s “heart” is in the relationship
Ex. – How we speak of our relationships with friends
• What we say to the people says more about our relationship with them than it
does our relationship with our friend
¨ We can’t go looking to men for a reward from God
What is your reward? / What do you want?
What I mean by want / greatest desire is the thing that you want to hold the most
ground in your heart
If we don’t like what our deepest want is right now, we can choose into a something
different
• Deuteronomy 30:15 (NLT) – Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between
life and death, between prosperity and disaster.”
• When we choose into a new place of desire, it requires faith
If our greatest reward is to have connection with the Father, it will require things
such as faith
• Because relationship is a heart item, it requires listening to the draw on the
heart
¨ Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) – And it is impossible to please God without faith.
Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He
rewards those who sincerely seek Him.
The most dangerous things that the world faces today are people that
have their eyes on the wrong prize.
• How our want manifests through faith
¨ Mark 5:24-34 (NLT) – The story of the woman who thought, “If I just touch
his cloak, I will be healed.”
If we have decided the reward that we want, we will know where to go to
find it and whom we find it from
When we take the desire of our heart and go after it – that is faith
Connect with Him in private
If we want to connect with Him and only Him, we must give of ourselves in a way that
He is the only one who can find it and reward us accordingly
Put it where only one who “sees everything” can find it, receive it, and respond
Corporate Connection with God
The manifestation of what happens privately will produce publicly
Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks
• From our connection with Him, God gives a good measure, pressed down,
overflowing to pour out to others.
¨ If our connection is with men, we are empty and trying to be filled up by
praises, etc.
Conclusion
