13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Matthew 5:13-14 (NLT)

As followers of Jesus Christ we are called to be salt and light in our world. Salt and light are both essential to life, but they must be measured in a delicate balance. Too little or too much of either will have drastic effects on the human body and can eventually result in serious illness or even death. However, in the right proportions they bring perfection in all things. The perfect amount of salt can be used to fertilize a field to grow crops, preserve food for storage, and season it to perfection when it’s ready to eat. With the right amount of light the food will grow and flourish. Too much salt sown into the soil of a field will kill every plant growing in it, or too much on food for eating or storing will ruin it completely.

As followers of Jesus Christ we have both the power of life and destruction within us. We need to be cultural leaders, as a city on the hill, shining our light and sowing salt to bring renewal to our lands and to our society. Our willingness to partner with God, or our unwillingness, will determine if we bring life or destruction to our world. Let us take time to pray today, that we may share our Christ-light and not hide it; that we may be the perfect amount of salt spread across the land, awakening hearts to new life in Jesus Christ.

Dear Jesus, we humbly ask that You open our hearts today to see the light and salt we may be hiding. Thank You for allowing us to partner with You in spreading life to our communities, our homes, and our nation. May we persevere in our walk with You, sowing seeds and bringing in the harvest. We praise Your name, Jesus, for You are the Creator of all things, and we know You will renew this earth!
In Jesus name, Amen
