New Wine Skins by Cassidy Gage

Scripture:

No one puts new wine into old wineskins: otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins: but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins. Mark 2:22

Observation:

Jesus was constantly challenging his followers and their stale practices. Worship and prayer became ritualistic instead of a way to glorify him. John and his disciples fasted, while Jesus’ did not. When people questioned Jesus on this, He told them “No one puts new wine into old wineskins: otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins: but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.” (Mark 2:22). Jesus was telling them not to fall into their old ways, but to change their mind sets. When you put new wine into a new wine skin it allows the skin to shape with the wine and will slowly age along with the wine. However, old wine skins are brittle and maintain a definite shape, pouring new wine into them will cause more stress than they are able to handle and both are lost.

Application:

We can’t put new ideas into our old mind sets and we can’t expect different outcomes from the same behavior. To repent means to shift one’s mindset. As Christian’s we have repented from our old ways and are called to take up our crosses daily. In Christ we are redeemed and made new every single morning. The Lord cannot pour His blessings and His love into an old wine skin. God wants to fill you with His love and His blessing and, like new wine in a wine skin, He wants to shape you and age along-side you.

Prayer:

Thank You, Lord for saving us from our old ways. We were stuck in our in our wild skins unknowing of Your grace and love. You have made us new in You and are continuously shaping us in Your light and allowing us to grow along-side You. Thank You for saving us and filling us in Your love, Your glory, and Your grace. You meet us where we are but love us too much to allow us to stay there and I thank You for that. You are a magnificent and loving God. Thank You. Amen.
