Unity by John Colman
Psalms 133 ‘Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”
Look at how fantastic unity is! Not to be confused with communist propaganda, but in realistic ways, being in unity has some amazing results. Or, it can go too far as demonstrated with the Tower of Babel. Through being unified in the Holy Spirit, the early church was able to have incredible impact on the people around them, and added more to the Kingdom of God daily. Through unity in Christ, the underground churches in China and other countries are able to keep the faith alive, despite persecution by the government, enabling people to come to know Christ and grow with Him.
Application: Today, in small town Durango, for some reason we are incredibly divided over different ideas of who God is. (look around at all of the churches in town) If we were in unity with Christ and each other, based on the sheer number of people who follow God, think of the things that could be done. The love and joy that could be shared. Unity is important.
God, thank You so much for giving us this opportunity to follow You, and by doing so, seeking unity with each other. Help us to remember that unity is not being the same as the person next to us, rather it’s working as ourselves, in harmony with You and them. Give us the ability to find joy in this, even when challenges arise or it doesn’t feel like any progress is being made.
