Peace by Morgan Daniels

Mark 4:35-41
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

freedom from disturbance; tranquility.
This is an instance in the Bible where Jesus shows us what true peace is like. I personally have thought it was a feeling. Like when making a big life decision I would “follow the peace” or “I don’t feel peace about this”. What I was following and feeling is a completely different devo. But what is important is that Jesus didn’t get up and say “don’t you feel peace because I am with you?” They had the Messiah on the boat with them in the midst of the storm and they didnt “feel” peace. Simply because that’s not what peace is. Jesus is showing us that He is so at peace that He is free from any disturbance. Jesus was not disturbed by the storm. He was sleeping. While this boat was filling with water and almost flipping, He was sleeping. In our chaotic world of hurt, pain, murder, darkness, Jesus longs for us to be at peace. Free from any disturbance. We are aware that the Holy Spirit is with us wherever we go, and now we understand that peace is not a “feeling”. In the midst of our chaotic world Jesus doesn’t want us to “feel” peace, He wants us to be at peace with Him, knowing that He is almighty, all powerful, all knowing. And we find freedom, rest, true peace. We know He is with us, but we also know who the wind and the sea obey.

Fully know that peace is not a feeling. That it is a gift. A freedom, that Jesus gives out freely to us everyday.

God we thank you for this morning or this afternoon whenever we are reading this Lord. We thank You for the opportunity to fast with a community. We pray that this reading today would just soak in so deeply. Lord that we would know that You are peace and that we can find true peace with You God, just knowing that You are God. Thank You, Amen.
