Connection by Nick Carico

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8 NLT)

Jesus gave the words of Acts 1:8 to the disciples when they asked Him if the time had come for Him to restore the kingdom of Israel in the physical. It was their desire to see Israel free from the outside rule of the Romans and brought back to the glory they imagined of the promised land that their descendants enjoyed. They knew deeply that Jesus was the connection piece that could bring to reality what they previously had only hoped for.

In response to the disciples’ question, Jesus would not give them the answer that they hoped for. Instead, He promised that they would receive the Holy Spirit, of whom Jesus earlier had said would guide them into all truth, speak what the Father says, and tell them about the future (John 16:13). He gave them another connection piece in His absence, so that they would have no reason to look elsewhere in finding manifested reality from hope. Jesus shared a further connection piece rather than the answer to the question, so that trust and relationship would flourish above any hope or need. And He told the disciples to share this connection with the rest of the World, that they could join such a family as this.

Jesus does not always give us answers the way that we envision. He does give us what we need to remain connected to Him in searching out what we hope for. He places the highest value on that connection, knowing that nothing else will serve us better. He has meticulously decided how to care for us, and does not leave us empty of what our souls need most. From such intentional care, we know that we can trust whatever response He gives us, because through connection, we have found ourselves in the best of hands.

Thank you Jesus for making connection a priority, and that whenever you seem distant, you left the Holy Spirit to ensure that we are never alone but always in your fold. Surely we have never known such great love on this earth outside of You. As such, we love and honor You!
